Building biotech base: Group creating marine research institute in Gloucester, MA

For the past two years, the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute’s public profile has been little more than a relatively discreet office space off the beaten path, tucked into the side of Cruiseport Gloucester. That seems about to change in a substantial way in the coming months.

Founded in 2013 by three internationally regarded genomic scientist-entrepreneurs and local business executive Sheree Zizik, GMGI now seems poised to flower into the public consciousness to assume a substantial place in Gloucester and within the state’s burgeoning biotechnology industry. “We’re establishing a world-leading marine biotech research institute in Gloucester with the idea of strengthening the Gloucester economy by creating a biotech hub on Cape Ann,” said Michele D. May, chairwoman of GMGI’s board of directors.
